Happy Weekend + Links I Love

screen grabHappy weekend, friends. Got any exciting weekend plans? Last night, I caught the world premiere of the family drama/heist thriller, The Forger (John Travolta, Tye Sheridan, Christopher Plummer, Abigail Spencer). I love attending TIFF premieres as the cast introduces the film and it’s always a treat to watch along with them.

Fall weather is definitely around the bend. Last night, we got a taste of what’s to come and I had to bundle up in a chunky knit sweater, scarf and fall jacket. If you’re laying low this weekend, here’s a roundup of links worth checking out…

+ Must-read: I really enjoyed reading this profile on Viola Davis. She landed the starring role, a criminal law professor in the upcoming series, “How to Get Away with Murder” which debuts on September 25 on ABC.

+ Caitlin Cronenberg captured the most exquisite portraits of stars at The Toronto International Film Festival. And if you still want more, check out these beautiful portraits shot by Justin Bishop for Vanity Fair.

+ Chriselle gives us a rundown of how she minimizes her stress in the mornings.

+ Fashion month’s first lap has ended and there’s a lot to digest. Standout collections: Alexander Wang’s ode to sneakers and Ralph Lauren’s romantic safari.

+ Perspiration inspiration: Runway beauty looks at Alexander Wang and Creatures of the Wind were inspired by sweaty, glowing faces and slick, “I just worked out” hair.

+ Style on the streets: Denim on denim and model off duty style.

+ The simple life: Living in a dumpster was the best move this University professor ever made.

+ I swear I could eat these Baked Chicken Nuggets all day, everyday. Oh, and while I am at it, these Honey Mustard Fried Chicken Sliders.

+ Layered love: Tres leches trifle with macerated strawberries. The perfect way to hold onto summer just a wee bit longer.

+ Girl power: This career profile on Associate Real Estate Broker Christian Ross is pretty inspiring.

+ TED Talk for your weekend: I am the son of a terrorist. Here’s how I chose peace. I found this talk to be incredibly eye-opening and moving. A valuable lesson in empathy.

Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Happy Tuesday + Links I Love

balenciagaHappy Tuesday! Hope you all had a relaxing weekend. Did you catch the World Cup Final on Sunday? I soaked up all the action in a sports bar with one of my closest friends over apple cider beer and munchies. Both teams put on an amazing performance and the atmosphere was intense. I’ve developed a new-found respect for goalkeepers, especially German goalie Manuel Neuer who makes stopping shots look like child’s play. Oh and he’s such a hottie!

Here’s a roundup of the links I’m loving this week…

+ Lauren Conrad shares her summer nail polish picks. I think I’ll give tangerine a try this summer!

+ Love this post from Peace Love Shea on dressing to impress ourselves.

+ Supermodel and classically trained ballerina Karlie Kloss shares her summertime fitness tips.

+ 3 Facts About the Psychology of Air Travel.

+ Spending a night in a tree house is on my must-do list. I’ll be bookmarking this list of tree house hotels from around the world.

+ The best campaigns of Autumn/Winter 2014/2015: Tom Ford, Chanel, Balenciaga, Jason Wu, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry and Alberta Ferretti all make the cut.

+ Carin’s photos from the Dior Haute Couture show are out of this world.

+ These Bourbon Salted Caramel Milkshakes look and sound divine.

+ Stephanie teamed up with eLUXE to release limited edition tees! I can’t wait to get my hands on the NORTHNORTH tee.

+ For all the Pinterest addicts: Pinterest’s Head of Product shares the company’s unique approach to building new features users love.

For the Love of Cherries

It’s 95 degrees and sticky in the city today and that means I’m craving my favourite summer treat – cherries. Tart or sweet, I’m not picky. Not only does this fruit throw a party for your taste buds, it also boasts unbelievable health benefits.

  • Cherries contain vitamins A, B, and C and minerals like calcium and phosphorus
  • Rich in flavonoids and procyanidin, cherries help reduce stress and fight dementia
  • High in potassium, cherries help combat hypertension and stroke
  • High in fibre, vitamin C, carotenoids and anthocyanins, cherries help ward off cancer
  • Antioxidants known as anthocyanins help discourage diabetes by reducing insulin resistance and increasing glucose intolerance
  • Anthocyanin also helps reduce inflammation and plaque keeping your heart healthy
  • Phytochemicals block inflammation-causing enzymes, reducing pain from arthritis and other ailments
  • Tart cherries naturally contain melatonin which helps promote restful sleep

Let’s face it. I could finish a bag of cherries in one sitting easily. But this summer, I plan on making a couple of cherry-filled recipes. After searching high and low, I handpicked these delicious sips and eats starring the superfruit.

For the Love of Avocado

I swear I could eat avocados for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Ever since I discovered all the goodness this creamy fruit has to offer, I never leave the fruit market without one or two in my basket.

Touted as one of the healthiest foods on earth, avocados are packed with essential nutrients including vitamin A, B, C, E & K, iron, magnesium and potassium. The delicious fruit has amazing anti-inflammatory properties thanks to healthy fats like oleic acid which increases the absorption of nutrients.

Research shows that avocados lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease and help stabilize blood sugar.

Rich in fibre, avocados help you maintain a healthy digestive system.

For a snack, I’ll cut into a ripe avocado, sprinkle it with salt and chili flakes and a squirt of lemon. On weekend mornings, I mash avocado, spread it on toast and top with a fried egg, tomato and havarti cheese. Eggs and avocado are a match made in heaven!

Recently, I scoured the web for incredibly delicious recipes to feed my avocado obsession.

Happy World Nutella Day

KeepCalm_CarryASpoon-240x300I’m going a lil’ nuts today. It’s World Nutella Day after all. And we can thank Sara Rosso from Ms. Adventures in Italy for this blissful day. Back in 2007, Sara had a dream – that everyone around the world would eat, drink, cook, bake, or even play with Nutella on the same day. So she created NutellaDay.com and invited Michelle Fabio from Bleeding Espresso to join her in co-hosting this special day. This year’s event will be the 8th annual World Nutella Day and the duo continue to encourage Nutella lovers to get creative with the sweet chocolaty-hazelnut spread and blog about their creations.

In honour of this delicious day, I scoured the internet for the most scoop-worthy Nutella recipes to share with you all. Grab a spoon and a jar and let’s celebrate!

For the love of kale

I’ve finally taken the plunge. Yesterday, I walked down the fresh produce aisle and instead of grabbing romaine lettuce, I reached for kale. It’s weird. I have no problem ordering a kale salad or a mushroom and kale pasta dish while I’m out, but I’m afraid to make it at home. I looove experimenting in the kitchen so why do I find this green leafy God-send so intimidating? The textured leaves have got more iron than beef, more calcium than milk, and 10 times more Vitamin C than spinach. It’s good for our eyes and skin, lowers cholesterol, strengthens bones, boosts our immune system, and fights cancer. It’s time to give my health a well-needed boost, so I’ve been scouring the internet for recipes featuring our friend with benefits. Here are 10 of my favourites…
