Street Style Inspiration :: Grey sweatshirt + metallic skirt

garance dore in grey sweatshirtleigh lezark in grey sweatshirt

Garance Dore and Leigh Lezark school us on the proper way to wear metallics before the sun goes down – pair a metallic skirt with a simple grey sweatshirt.

For fall 2014, Diane von Furstenberg sent out short metallic wrap dresses while gold and silver bags shone at Prada. Models’ eyes got the glittery treatment at Dior and Altuzarra while golden manicures showed up at Tadashi Shoji. At Mara Hoffman, the tips of braids were dipped in gold while at Suno, models sported gold centre parts.

I really love this metallic pleated skirt by Mango.

Are you on board with this trend?

NYFW Spring 2015 :: Street Style

The gaze has shifted to the runways and streets of London, but my eyes are still fixed on the core of the Big Apple. The street style set gave us new takes on denim, chambray, stripes, shades of grey and camel, head-to-toe black, navy, army green, bold prints, pretty pleats, and cool outerwear. Here’s one final roundup of gorgeous, inspiring looks for spring…

screen grabHappy weekend, friends. Got any exciting weekend plans? Last night, I caught the world premiere of the family drama/heist thriller, The Forger (John Travolta, Tye Sheridan, Christopher Plummer, Abigail Spencer). I love attending TIFF premieres as the cast introduces the film and it’s always a treat to watch along with them.

Fall weather is definitely around the bend. Last night, we got a taste of what’s to come and I had to bundle up in a chunky knit sweater, scarf and fall jacket. If you’re laying low this weekend, here’s a roundup of links worth checking out…

+ Must-read: I really enjoyed reading this profile on Viola Davis. She landed the starring role, a criminal law professor in the upcoming series, “How to Get Away with Murder” which debuts on September 25 on ABC.

+ Caitlin Cronenberg captured the most exquisite portraits of stars at The Toronto International Film Festival. And if you still want more, check out these beautiful portraits shot by Justin Bishop for Vanity Fair.

+ Chriselle gives us a rundown of how she minimizes her stress in the mornings.

+ Fashion month’s first lap has ended and there’s a lot to digest. Standout collections: Alexander Wang’s ode to sneakers and Ralph Lauren’s romantic safari.

+ Perspiration inspiration: Runway beauty looks at Alexander Wang and Creatures of the Wind were inspired by sweaty, glowing faces and slick, “I just worked out” hair.

+ Style on the streets: Denim on denim and model off duty style.

+ The simple life: Living in a dumpster was the best move this University professor ever made.

+ I swear I could eat these Baked Chicken Nuggets all day, everyday. Oh, and while I am at it, these Honey Mustard Fried Chicken Sliders.

+ Layered love: Tres leches trifle with macerated strawberries. The perfect way to hold onto summer just a wee bit longer.

+ Girl power: This career profile on Associate Real Estate Broker Christian Ross is pretty inspiring.

+ TED Talk for your weekend: I am the son of a terrorist. Here’s how I chose peace. I found this talk to be incredibly eye-opening and moving. A valuable lesson in empathy.

Hope you enjoy your weekend!

NYFW Spring 2015 :: Street Style in Black & White

It’s day 6 of New York Fashion Week and things are heating up both on and off the runways. On the streets, the fashion crowd seem to be putting their own personal spin on the most classic of combos. Here’s a roundup of sleek black and white looks spotted outside the tents.

foxcatcherHappy Friday, everyone! What’s on the agenda this weekend? It’s pretty hot and sticky here with the temperature currently sitting at 97F. Between TIFF, Cirque du Soleil, and the return of Tony Award winning musical Wicked, there’s lots to choose from this weekend. Get outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather while you still can. Oh, and don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen.

If you’re spending time online this weekend, here’s a bunch of great reads worth diving into…

+ Scene-stealer: Style.com continues to “see fashion first” with its brand spanking new website. With an emphasis on user-friendly navigation, an easy-to-scan news feed, and improved sharing tools, it’s a fashion lover’s dream.

+ Incredible New York Times piece on the multi-talented Alexander Wang.

+ Must read: Seat 21A: A window seat reminder of humanity. Let’s make a conscious effort to be kind to everyone we meet.

+ Sharing is caring: Chriselle’s special announcement video moved me to tears. She is so brave for sharing her story and sparking dialogue among women.

+ I love a really good infographic: The Great Wheel of Food Mash-ups.

+ Speaking of food mash-ups, I’m loving these California roll nachos. Quite possibly the best combo ever.

+ Warby Parker made a video to preview their Fall 2014 collection and it’s outta sight!

+ Let’s heal together: Have you heard about The Monument Quilt? This summer, the quilt traveled around the United States sharing the stories of survivors of rape and abuse and encouraging others to speak up. “By stitching our stories together, we are creating and demanding public space to heal”.

+ Empire State of Mind: Coco Rocha steals the street style show at New York Fashion Week. Loving the graphic bob.

+ TIFF madness has taken over the city. This TIFF 2014 survival guide covers everything – from what to pack in your trusty tote bag (wet wipes are a must) to where to grab the best grub before screenings.

+ I will be catching the red carpet premiere of this film at TIFF on Monday evening. Helloooo Channing Tatum.

NYFW Fall 2014 :: Beauty Roundup

Let’s face it. We all fall madly in love with the hair, makeup and pretty manicures at fashion week. The right hairstyle or lip colour can really help bring a designer’s vision to life. For this season, eyes, lips, nails and even hair all got the Midas touch. Ponytails ruled the runways and makeup artists saw the cat eye from many different angles.

Pretty Ponytails – high, low, streaked and everything in between

Rebecca Minkoff low ponytailTomboy-chic ponytail at Rebecca Minkoff

Minkoff’s Fall 2014 collection is feminine with a menswear twist. TRESemme lead stylist Jeanie Syfu created a tomboy-inspired ponytail – neat and slightly messy at the same time.

herve leger ponytailSci-fi inspired ponytail at Herve Leger

Bumble and bumble’s lead stylist Laurent Philippon created a sleek, futuristic ponytail, while colourist Zoe Wiepert added a pop of colour with bright blue and orange extensions.

kate spade high ponytailSuper high ponytail at Kate Spade

For Kate Spade, two ponytails are better than one. Garnier’s hair stylist Tommy Bucket says the hair was meant to reflect the collection’s inspiration – a trip to Shanghai. The hair team created a playful, high ponytail by straightening the hair completely and securing it with a piece of leather. For the models donning hats during the show, they did a simple low ponytail.

vivienne tam's ponytailsSleek and low ponytail at Vivienne Tam

Tam was inspired by a trip to the Silk Road and the women she encountered there. Matthew Curtis, lead stylist for TRESemme, created the low, sleek ponytail and wrapped the hair around it to hide the hair elastic. Pretty clever, huh?

Which beauty trends from the runways are you loving so far? I can’t wait to see what Paris has to offer!

It’s the weekend! Got any fun plans? I’m still recovering from last weekend’s getaway. I guess I’m not as young as I thought I was! Yesterday, the city was hit with a ton of snow, then freezing rain and thunder showers overnight. I think I’ll just stay indoors this weekend. Whatever you’re doing this weekend, keep warm and stay safe. Here are few fun links to kick your weekend off right…

Talking with Justin Timberlake’s longtime choreographer.

Behind-the-scenes with Aimee Song and Heartloom.

Watch this.

I swear this blogger was a ballerina in another life.

Amazing read: Erin’s take on bloggers at New York Fashion Week.

Bobby Flay schools us on how to cook everything.

How do I get on the wait list for these beauties.

A thoughtful post: Allison DeBona weighs in on getting healthy for ballet.

Perfect snow day cocktail.

And this is why I love Justin Timberlake.

Have an amazing weekend, everyone!

NYFW Roundup :: Statement-Making Runway Bags

Milan Fashion Week kicks off today, but I’m still swooning over the bags I spotted on the New York runways. For fall 2014, designers really thought outside of the box (or in this case, bag) focusing on eye-catching colours and prints, never-before-seen shapes, and catchy phrases. And if you’re Alexander Wang – bags that double as survival kits!
